Packaging machines can be broadly divided into two categories:
1. Machines used for processing packaging materials and packaging containers;
2. Machines used to complete the packaging process. The discussion here is limited to the latter; that is, the machine that completes the packaging process is called a packaging machine. The definition of a packaging machine in the national standard is: “A machine that completes all or part of the packaging process. The packaging process includes the main packaging processes such as filling, wrapping, and sealing, as well as related upstream and downstream processes such as cleaning, stacking, and disassembly. It also includes auxiliary equipment such as stamping and measuring.”
Based on this, packaging machines can be divided into 8 categories: 1. Wrapping machine, 2. Filling machine, 3. Sealing machine, 4. Labeling machine, 5. Multifunctional packaging machine, 6. Wrapping Machine
The machine that wraps products in flexible packaging materials is called a wrapping machine. Depending on the different wrapping methods, it can be classified as follows: 1. Fold-wrapping machine, 2. Twist-wrapping machine, 2. Seam-wrapping machine, 1. Cover-wrapping machine, 2. Wrap-wrapping machine, 3. Stretch-wrapping machine, 4. Body-wrapping machine, 5. Filling Machine
The machine that fills the packaging container with a specific quantity of packaging material is called a filling machine. Multifunctional Packaging Machine
A machine capable of performing more than two packaging processes is called a multifunctional packaging machine. They are generally named after the packaging process they can perform. The most important ones are: 1. Fill-and-seal machine, 2. Form-fill-seal machine (for forming packaging materials), 3. Form-fill-seal machine (for forming prefabricated packaging containers), 4. Vacuum packaging machine (fill-vacuum-seal); 5. Blow-molding packaging machine (fill-blow-seal), 6. Wrapping and labeling machine, etc.

Cleaning, Sterilization, and Drying Machine
Machines that clean, sterilize, and dry packaging containers before packaging, or packaged products after packaging, are called cleaning machines, sterilization machines, and drying machines. Bottle washers, can washers, spray sterilization machines, steam sterilization machines, ultraviolet sterilization machines, hot-air dryers, infrared dryers, etc., which are widely used in the light industry, belong to this category of machines. If a machine has multiple functions, it can be named by combining those functions, such as a cleaning-drying machine, a sterilization-drying machine, or a cleaning-sterilization-drying machine.
Containerizer
A machine that packages multiple items at once is called a containerizing machine. It can be classified based on the containerizing method, such as: 1. strapping machine, 2. binding machine, 3. baler, 4. packaging machine, etc.
Packaging Auxiliary Machines and Equipment
All machines and equipment that do not fall under the 7 items listed above but are necessary for the packaging process can be referred to as packaging auxiliary machines and equipment. Examples include conveyor belts, stacking tables, dosing machines, box openers, gluing machines, printers, inspection machines, etc.
In addition to the classification of packaging machines—which is primarily based on the machine’s packaging function, as mentioned above—they can sometimes be further categorized based on their level of automation or their area of application.
A machine that, for example, manually feeds in packaging materials or discharges packaged products, but can perform other packaging operations automatically, is called a semi-automatic packaging machine. A machine that automatically handles the feeding, packaging, and discharge of the finished product is called an automatic packaging machine.
A packaging machine that can package only products with a specific shape, specification, and size is called a specialized packaging machine. A packaging machine that can package products with two or more different shapes, specifications, and sizes is called a multifunctional packaging machine. A packaging machine capable of packaging products of any shape, specification, and size within a certain range is called a general-purpose packaging machine.
